We aim to create confident and numerate pupils who are equipped with a range of maths skills needed in life.  Pupils will be taught how to reason and solve mathematical problems in a variety of contexts, which are related to pupils’ experiences where possible.

We hope to instil a love of all things mathematical!

In the early years, learning in mathematics through structured play is an important part of our teaching.  The development of early mathematical understanding takes place in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments through role play; experience in sand, water and construction equipment and problem solving.  Pupils learn to sort, match, count, compare quantities, describe patterns and explore relationships between shape and space.

In KS1 and KS2, mathematics is taught using The National Curriculum (2014)

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

The areas of mathematics are:

Number                        Place value

Calculations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

                                   Fractions, decimals and percentages

Geometry                      Properties of shapes

                                    Position and direction
