Pupil Voice

The term “pupil voice” refers to ways of listening to the views of pupils and/or involving them in decision-making. A feature of an effective school is one that engages pupils as active participants in their education and in making a positive contribution to their school and local community.

At Skelmanthorpe Academy we believe that all pupils should have the opportunities to share their pupil voice. We do this in a number of ways:

· Pupils have opportunities to take on student leadership roles within the curriculum.  The older children in school also take on a leadership as House captains and ‘Shed People’.

· The weekly ’Pupil Voice Assemblies’  play a major part in providing a structured and systematic approach to enable all pupils to share their ideas, views and concerns about the school and wider community.

· Pupils have regular opportunities to discuss issues that may arise in school through Class and House meetings.

· The curriculum allows opportunities for pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding when using their pupil voice.

· Pupils have opportunities to create mind maps at the beginning of the topics and review their learning at the end of the topic.

· Governors also take opportunities to talk to children about aspects of their school life when making visits into school.

Having listened to pupils we then use their comments and ideas to inform our future school development plans when appropriate.
